Star Trek 1227: Day of Honor

1227. Day of Honor

PUBLICATION: Star Trek: Deep Space Nine #13, Marvel Comics, January 1998

CREATORS: Michael Martin and Andy Mangels (writers), Tom Morgan and Keith Williams (artists)

STARDATE: 50796.2 (follows the last issue)

PLOT: A relatively small complement of Cardassian and Dominion ships attack the station and the fleet massed there. The Defiant goes head to head against Dukat's flagship and is defeated, only to be saved by the Klingons, and then the Romulans mysteriously decloaking nearby. They don't want the Dominion to gain a foothold in the quadrant. Meanwhile, the station's been boarded and cadet T'Priell is severely wounded. Soon, the Dominion is on the run and the Enterprise-E, along with other ships, chase after them through the Wormhole. On DS9, Sisko buys Omega Squad some time by insisting T'Priell be kept under observation, but despite the help rendered, they are still facing execution. Kira and the rest of her pirate crew only gets slaps on the wrist.

CONTINUITY: See previous issue (Omega Squad, Nog, Garak, Cardassians, Dominion, Martok, Enterprise-E, Troi). Morn, Rom and Leeta appear, but have no lines of dialog. Marc Alaimo appears in a dual role, as Dukat and as the Romulan Tebok (The Neutral Zone). Tomalak also appears. Today is the Klingon Day of Honor (Day of Honor).

DIVERGENCES: The title was later used for a Voyager episode. Martok's beard tends to disappear depending on the panel. In Voyager, the Day of Honor is a chance to reflect on past deeds; here, you are also meant to join forces with a hated enemy.

PANEL OF THE DAY - Tim knows how to get Klingons to buy comics.
REVIEW: DS9-style outer space fighting, with the Romulans once again hanging out in the background (to fulfill T'Priell's destiny, it seems). The art's a little rough, and I wish more would be done with the telepathic element (it IS called Telepathy War, after all). Was this battle only a distraction while Dominion forces land on Vulcan and Betazed? Are the Admirals after Omega Squad actually shapeshifters? A lot of questions remain to be answered. The link to the Day of Honor gives the writers a chance to do a little bit more with Worf, and I especially like how Martok doesn't save the day right away, giving Worf every chance at glory.

This issue had more than its fair share of behind the scenes insanity. But I was very proud of the end result. If I'm not mistaken, Tom Morgan fully penciled the issue in 2 weeks.

Crossovers must be pretty intense. And I guess why so many these days suffer from delays.
