This Week in Geek (12-18/03/07)

Another fairly heavy week...

Buys'n'Gifts

As far as purchases go, I got myself a couple of DVDs: Babel and Casino Royale. Unfortunately, our DVD player gave out yesterday after three years of steady service, so we immediately braved the bad weather to get a new one. I find it ridiculous that it would classify as any sort of emergency, but it did. Hey, I've got a Super-Friends DVD to get through...

More exciting this week was a surprise retirement party/roast held last night in my (dubious) honor, as I'm retiring from improv after 20 years. The roast obviously made fun of my geekhood, but people who actually go through the trouble of staging a puppet show funeral and Photoshop themselves as Klingons in a powerpoint presentation live in glass houses, as far as I'm concerned. Thanks, Pout and Elyse! And thanks to all who made a point of doing something. In particular, my thanks to my brother in arms Bauble who got me ROM Spaceknight #1. In lieu of any kind of Essential collection, I may just have to collect them all.

"Accomplishments"
Well, I suppose the obvious thing is that I've just reached 100 days of daily blogging, easily spotted by my daily Trek review. It's a small benchmark, but hopefully the first of many. Next stop: 365 days!

Warcraft: As you know and doubltess don't care, I'm currently running two characters. My old slowpoke of a warrior, Sarajane has just reached level 44 and a really cool shield Bass had sent me became available. I wasn't expecting it to be this badass though!
Dranai shaman Lynda with a Y got the most playtime, going from level 9 to 18 over the weekend. I've been enjoying the Dranai's SF storyline quite a lot. They just crashed their fantasy spaceship onto an island and the radiation from their engine has mutated the creatures there into monsters. Neater still are the SF in-jokes. For example, the royal family seem to be named after Dax's hosts (other than Jadzia and Ezri).
I'm having fun, and I've gotten a boost of zeal because my roommate just went and addicted himself to the game. It basically means that I shout out what level I've gotten to as it happens, and he responds "Damn it!"

As I did last week, listened to a few Doctor Who Big Finish audios while playing: Embrace the Darkness was a hit and miss 8th Doctor story that I didn't dislike, but didn't love either; The Apocalypse Element was a 6th Doctor Dalek story, and I'm sorry to say it just grated on my nerves, with companion Evelyn particularly not suited to the tale; The Church and the Crown was a fun historical for the 5th Doctor in the musketeer era; and No Place Like Home was a cute 1-hour promo with a tour of the TARDIS and a silly villain, rather fun fluff.

My WhoCCG's latest set is almost done - 5 cards to go! So that's 8 new cards this week, which isn't bad, including The Rani and a Dalek Ally!

I managed to read Divided We Fall, a JLA trade paperback collecting issues 47 to 54, all penned by Mark Waid. It features three stories that all deal with dreams becoming reality, and I can't quite believe they ran consecutively. It's all a bit samey, though the last one is definitely the strangest, and thus the best, though the one before that features Skeletor having breakfast, so it's not all bad.
What's that? It's Dr. Destiny? Oh well.

I'll forgo recommending websites this week, since I've still got more stuff to do, but I've added a number of blogs to the list on the right. I recommend them all.

Why do you think I have to quit improv?
